NKK’s Demo Team Takes England by Storm

In March of 2008, the NKK’s Kenpo Karate Action Demonstration Team traveled to England and performed a 20 minute demonstration for the Opening Ceremonies of the International Karate Championships held on the Island of Jersey, in the United Kingdom. This invitation came as a direct result of the rave reviews the team has received from previous performances.

During Spring Break, nineteen NKK students and their parents and coaches traveled from Delaware to England, spending 4 days sightseeing such well known attractions as Stonehenge and Avebury, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and other attractions in and around London. The students then went on to the Island of Jersey in the Channel Islands and performed in front of an audience of 4,000 people with competitors from over 26 countries from around the world.

The theme of the team’s performance was “The Dream” and it illustrated the dream of becoming a Black Belt and all that is involved in the pursuit of that goal. The team performed with a professional soundtrack and a full light show and was featured on an hour long program televised on Sky Sports TV (The British version of ESPN). They were greeted by His Excellency, the Lieutenant General of Jersey as well as the Education, Sport & Culture President.

In addition to the Opening Ceremonies performance, the team members participated in both individual and team tournament competition. The 19 students that performed returned with 64 trophies and medals.
