Kenpo Karate Demo Team Performs At
Michael Jordan’s Final Basketball Game

The Newark Kenpo Karate Action Demo Team from Newark, Delaware was invited to perform a pre-game demonstration for Michael Jordan’s final game at the First Union Center in Philadelphia, Pa. on April 16, 2003. The team, consisting of 17 members ages 8-17, performed a 4 ½ minute musical demonstration featuring a unique form of American Kenpo Karate developed by 10th Degree Senior Master Paul Mills of Evanston, Wy. Throughout their performance, the members executed precisely timed dynamic sequences including a 3 man street self-defense routine which brought the house roaring to its feet.
The demo was performed to a sold out crowd of 21,257 people including such noted celebrities as Bill Cosby, Spike Lee, Boys II Men, Julius Erving, and Moses Malone all of whom were on hand to commemorate Michael Jordan’s third and final retirement from the game of Basketball. The Demo Team’s performance was followed by the National Anthem sung by Mr. Teddy Pendergrass.
Head instructors and coaches, 6th Degree Kathy Owen and 5th Degree Marlene Shear, were honored to represent the martial arts and thrilled with the opportunity for the kids to be able to participate in such a historic event.
